For one to have their own beliefs in this specific religion gives them the opportunity to communicate with unworldly beings such as dead people or gods. The author wants to get across that to understand this concept one must be involved with it since she correlates this idea with one corresponding with books by rewriting them. The universe has so many mysteries to it that people have to create hypotheticals and theories to make sense out of its unknowns until they eventually come to an overall conclusion. This mystery regards communication with a higher being or authority to know whether or not it can be concluded that they exist within our reality.
